Year 7 & 9 Netball success
Year 7
A new year and a new team, and what a team Year 7 have been! After a convincing win at Bristol Central Schools Tournament, the young team met Ashton Park School, Redland Green School and Montpelier High School in the Bristol Schools Final. First on court FHS showed utter class and skill as they started their finals with a win against Redland Green. Superb team work and mid court play from nippy Jemima, consideration from Jannah and steady play from Delilah meant every centre pass was taken advantage of to deliver the ball convincingly onto our super shooters Martha and Angel who, without hesitation, managed to land their shots confidently from a range of distances leaving the opposition with nothing more than watch on.
Defensively FHS took on every team showing patience down the court to drive into space and hold off the opposition. Outstanding defence from Mariam and Alba throughout meant the oppositions’ attack was put under constant pressure which allowed the team to work together to turn over play throughout the court with all teams. This is certainly not the last we have seen from this team this year and we’re looking forward to seeing them grow.

Year 9
The girls put up a good fight against Ashton Park we had some great play; our defence worked hard to turn over an impressive seven turnovers in the first half and nine in the second half with Molly, Robyn and Maya turning over play, snatching in rebounds and bringing the ball back down the court. This is where Layla and Isla were waiting calmly, bringing the ball down swiftly into the goal circle. Every player applied constant pressure across court, the passes were strong and we worked hard to rebound and fight for loose balls, which allowed our shoots Megan and Isabelle get into a strong position in the circle. Ashton Park wasn’t going down without a fight, however, and put a lot of pressure on our shoots to shoot from afar which meant unfortunately we weren’t able to capitalise.
After a close game to Ashton Park, FHS took on Redland Green, who with two regional players and the majority of club players in the Redland team, meant we had our work cut out. FHS defence was outstanding though, the girls kept their heads high and played to the very last second. Ultimately the team’s experience was too much and they came away with the win.
It is very easy to see a team drop their heads and give up in the face of defeat, FHS never once dropped their effort levels and played with utter class until the final whistle, they hustled for every ball, drove out hard for every centre pass and showed complete sportsmanship to both the players and umpires.
Even though we lost Mrs Thomas was extremely proud of the ways the girls played; the team has great potential and we’re looking forward to seeing what they can deliver next year.
