Students shine in Classics competition
Across Key Stage 3 last term, students competed in the ‘Ovid in the West Country’ competition run by Bristol Classics Hub, where they used one of the classical myths to inspire a new piece of art. As an English department, we had a really tough time picking between some excellent entries, but in the end we chose Eddie’s Icarus-inspired poem, Rudy’s King Midas and daughter model, and Lydia’s retelling of the story of the Golden Apple.
On Wednesday 29th November, champions from across the South West gathered. The standard of entries from every school was outstanding, and the setting – the Wills Memorial Building Hall at Bristol University – was inspiring. Before the judging started, we were treated to a performance by the oral storyteller Daniel Morden, who told the myth of Persephone and Demeter.
After this, the winners were announced. The judges talked about just how difficult it was to chose, but in the end they awarded the Fairfield prize to Eddie for his fantastic poem. While we didn’t win the big prize this time, our entries were great both in quantity and quality, and we’ll definitely be returning next year.
Well done Eddie
