Oxford Museum Reward Trip for Years 7 & 8
It’s summer and so we, the FHS Maths department, ran two Key Stage 3 Reward Trips to three Oxford museums. We would love to have taken more students on this great trip, but sadly numbers were limited.
From the conversations on the way home, everybody enjoyed themselves and felt this was a great trip. We initially had a workshop at The History of Science Museum, with a specialist in Medieval Islamic Navigation devises. We calculated the direction to Mecca, only using the tools available at the time. Not only that, we discovered how practical and ingenious Islamic scholars were at the time, in measuring and predicting the rise and fall of the sun, as well as how to navigate across the global without GPS!
We then had a short walk for a picnic lunch, before we had a self-guided explore around The Natural History and Pitt Rivers Museums. There, we were in awe of the breadth of the exhibits on display and had the opportunity to touch and play around with the many “hands on” items. The building itself is magnificent and unique. If you have never been, all of these museums are free to enter and well worth the journey to Oxford.
We hope to run similar trips next year.
Wishing you a great summer from the FHS Maths Team
