LGBTQI+ inclusivity in Languages
Frau Barnes has been working hard to ensure inclusivity in our language’s curriculum. Over the past few years, she has been working closely with the Fairfield LGBTQI+ group to incorporate gender neutral pronouns and LGBTQI+ terminology into Modern Foreign Languages lessons. She has also ensured that photos and resources are representative of our LGBTQI+ community. Student feedback has been very positive with many feeling welcome and more included in the lessons and the topic content.
In addition to this, Frau Barnes was asked by Linguascope to run a webinar for fellow language teachers to share her best practice and discuss how they could also make their curriculum more inclusive. The webinar was so successful that she was asked back as one of the main speakers at the Linguascope Conference entitled “Diversity and Inclusivity in the Languages Classroom”.
This month is Pride month and Teachit Languages have chosen to publish resources created by Frau Barnes, which focus on learning German colours with LGBTQI+ flags and GCSE resources that cover the history of LGBTQ+ legislation.
“It was an honour to be asked to present for Linguascope, not once but twice. A lot of work has gone into our inclusivity journey and it is such a great feeling to share that success with others. I am also absolutely thrilled that my resources are being published by Teachit Languages as part of Pride month. I enjoyed making the resources and I can’t wait for other teachers to use them in their lessons.” Frau Barnes Assistant Director for Modern Foreign Languages
