Classics news – Club & All Award Ceremony
Each Tuesday of this term a group of students have been meeting with Tom Covill from Equity in Classics who, in partnership with Bristol University, have been working to diversify our understanding of the Classical world, with a particular focus on Classical Africa. Students from Year 7, 8 and 9 met weekly to cover topics as wide-ranging as the invention of written language, Classical mathematics, the storytelling of the griots and Yoruba mythology. They learned about Queen Amanirenas, who held off the Roman invaders, and thought about the implications of all of this in the modern world that we now live in. A great opportunity for our KS3 students which will hopefully get some of them thinking about studying Classical Civilisations at GCSE and beyond.
In recognition of our commitment to widening engagement with the Classics, on Wednesday 5th July we were invited to attend the Classics for All Teaching Awards, where we were awarded the prize for the Southwest network. Full details of the evening, including the nomination, can be found here: https://classicsforall.org.uk/news-and-events/events/teaching-awards-2023
