Bringing Greek myths to life: Students take part in Classics competition
The English Faculty took part again in Bristol Classics Hub’s Ovid in the Westcountry competition. Students were read Greek myths during library lessons, then completed creative responses to the stories. On Tuesday 2nd December, Fairfield’s three finalists were invited to the finals held in the Wills Memorial building at Bristol University. Over 100 students from Fairfield had to be whittled down to three finalists, so they did very well to get to this stage.
Fairfield’s first finalist was Y7 student Arya, who produced a storyboard of The Fall of Phaethon. This was a huge amount of time and effort and included detailed research of the story.
The second entry was a series of letters between Orpheus and Eurydice. Each letter was tea-stained, burned, addressed. There were even stamps with different Olympian gods on each envelope. Again, good research in there too. Another Y7 student, Mo, showing great imagination and immersion in the story.
The third finalist for Fairfield was Y9 student Manai. Manai produced a fabulous portrait of Aphrodite done in charcoal. Really skilled work way beyond most adults’ skills!
At the final, Fairfield were battling against schools from all over the Westcountry. Mo took second place overall, a really impressive achievement.
Well done to all of the Fairfield finalists: Mo, Manai and Arya!
