Our faculty
The SEND faculty has extensive experience and expertise in supporting children who may face barriers to their learning through difficulties in:
- Cognition and Learning
- Communication and Interaction
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs
- Sensory and/or Physical Needs
The faculty consists of the SENDCo, Deputy SENCo, SEND Manager, and a team of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs). The LSAs provide both in-class support and deliver individual and small group interventions in a SEND intervention room.
A Resource Base for students with Sensory Impairments is also based at FHS. This is where students receive support from LSAs, Teachers of the Deaf, and Qualified Teachers of the Visually Impaired.
The SEND Department has excellent links with external agencies to support students at FHS. We liaise closely with local services providing Educational Psychology, Sensory Support, Communication and Social Interaction support, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and Health Professionals.
We are made aware of students’ needs through close links with primary schools on students’ transition to FHS and through the strong links we build with families and carers. The Department of Individual Development also operates a referral process that allows FHS staff, students or parents and carers to refer students for further support.
SEND Transition
Our Individual Development Department support our new Year 7 SEND students by collecting information from both primaries, parents, and students. This information contributes to each student’s individualised SEND learning profile passport. The Individual Development Department will reach out and begin the transition process in Term 5.

SEND: Bristol’s Written Statement of Action (WSOA) and the Ofsted/CQC approval letter
Message from Bristol City Council: Please find attached the final version of Bristol’s Written Statement of Action (WSOA), and the Ofsted/CQC approval letter for your information. The Written Statement of Action is our response to the Ofsted/Care Quality Commission (CQC) Special Education Needs and Disabilities (SEND) inspection which took place in 2019. It is a transparent, formal framework for improving SEND provision which has been developed with a number of partners and incorporates the views of parents and carers.
Ofsted require that the Written Statement of Action must be published on local websites, so that parents, carers, children and young people can understand the actions we are taking to improve the effectiveness of the local area in identifying and meeting needs and improving outcomes for children and young people who have SEND.
