Universify offers students experience in top universities
For the past few years, Fairfield has been committed to providing our students with the opportunity to participate in the Universify Education Programme run in collaboration with Oxford University… and this summer was no different!
The programme aims to make students feel empowered and excited about fulfilling their potential at top universities. Its programme is run over the course of the year, involving a one-week summer school, a spring revision course, and monthly online coaching.
Back in January 2022, it was launched to our then Year 10 students to apply, with the programme only able to select two students from each school. Students were asked to write a personal statement detailing why they should be one of the two students chosen. Due to high numbers of applications, the students then went through an interview process.
Demi and Sinairie in Year 11 were our two successful applicants. We caught up with the two students at the beginning of this term to see how the summer school went:
Demi comments: “I enjoyed the summer programme and it has opened my eyes to potentially consider higher education as an option for me. Staying in halls of residence was fun and gave us the opportunity to become independent. During the days we would participate in a range of group work, which gave us the opportunity to meet new people for across the UK. We all have a group Whatsapp and still talk to each other.”
Sinairie adds: “They provided us with our own keys to stay in halls of residence. It was our responsibility to get up for lectures on time, which helped prove our independence. Having the opportunity to study Criminology as one of the lectures has definitely helped confirm that I want to study this subject in the future. Mentoring sessions have begun and I am finding them very valuable.”
We look forward to catching up again with both students in a few months to hear how their mentoring sessions have been going, especially as one of the mentors is a FHS Alumni. To our current Year 10 students, look out for this opportunity being launch in Term 3.
