School Gardening Club Flourishes with Green Initiatives and Future Growth

Fairfield is celebrating the blossoming success of their community gardening endeavours, led by the green thumbs of Fairfield’s very own gardening club. Spearheaded by the dedicated efforts of Mr Mears and Dr Ross, and supported by enthusiastic staff, the community is revelling in the benefits of having their own polytunnel and allotment space, complete with a serene pond.

This summer marked a significant milestone for Fairfield’s gardening community as the polytunnel received a new covering. This upgrade has allowed the gardening club to gather regularly for their Thursday lunchtime meetings. The group has wasted no time, getting their hands dirty by planting onions and garlic, while diligently preparing beds inside the tunnel for the upcoming growing seasons.

The club has become a hub for skill development, with members learning techniques such as chitting potatoes, sowing broad beans, and even potting on houseplants during the coldest days. The camaraderie among the group has fostered a sense of community spirit, as they collectively work towards expanding their gardening knowledge and contributing to the flourishing green space.

Anticipation is building within the gardening club as they look forward to the opportunity to attend Gardeners World Live in June. This event presents an exciting prospect for the community to showcase their green achievements and gain inspiration for expanding their repertoire of vegetables and fruits.

In the spirit of community collaboration, Fairfield’s gardening club extends an open invitation for resource contributions. Dr. Ross, leading the initiative, encourages families to drop off any gardening resources they can spare at the main reception. We are particularly in need of watering cans and trays to hold plant pots in (without holes e.g. plant trays B and Q ), but welcome most donations, please get in contact with Dr Ross ([email protected]) if you have anything to donate but are unsure of whether we can make use of it. Together, the community is sowing the seeds of a sustainable and vibrant future.
