Medical Mavericks Human Guinea Pig Show – Careers event
The Science Faculty hosted the Human Guinea Pig Show by Medical Mavericks during our Year 10 science lessons. Tom, a trained Physiologist and toxicologist, showcased a number of NHS careers and the medical equipment involved in their work. Careers highlighted were Vascular Scientist, Cardiac Physiologist, Medical Engineer, Renal & Urodynamics Scientist and Ophthalmic Scientist.
Demonstrations of a pulse doppler, spirometer, an ECG, vein scanner and an ophthalmoscope were demonstrated live during the show. The highlight however proved to be the video from a Bronchoscope as Pulmonologist doctors took biopsies of Tom’s lungs during a recent operation. It was really powerful to see the lungs, an organ we study in detail in biology, from the inside. The live stream was made available to our KS4 Scientists (Year 9, 10 and 11 cohorts) to view at home.
This special careers event links well with the Gatsby Benchmark 4: Linking careers into the Curriculum and Gatsby Benchmark 5: Encounters with Employers, as part of our commitment to achieving 100% across all of these benchmarks.
