Celebrating LGBT History Month
As with last year, we are proud to be celebrating LGBT History Month throughout February. We are looking forward to welcoming Creative Tuition (https://www.creativetuitioncollective.com/) who will be delivering an assembly to each year group across the week, together with a workshop for 30 students on the Friday. Schools Out (http://www.schools-out.org.uk/) who founded LGBT History Month will also be delivering a virtual talk.
Details of the assembly and workshop are shown below:
Summary
The assembly will explore Lara’s personal, tumultuous coming out and acceptance journey providing space for students to see sexuality can be fluid and discovering more sides to yourself can be empowering as well as important. Lara’s acceptance came through finding a group of queer people who supported her in the ups and downs of being queer, proud and out, Kiki Bristol. The presentation will end in the showing of the video of the very prominent, very beautiful queer, trans, intersex people of colour (QTIPOC) people in Bristol, reflecting a community proud of who they are.
Workshop
The theme of the workshop is pride, acceptance and community. The session will delve into the history of QTIPOC positioning them alongside current day QTIPOC heroes to show students that QTIPOC people have always been in existence and will always be in existence fighting for LGBTQIA+ rights. The session will end with small group discussions, where students will discuss the three questions indicated in the presentation slides and feedback key discussion points with the rest of the workshop attendees.
This workshop is intended to empower, celebrate and remind students there is a community out there for them ready to accept them for who they are and that it may be closer to home than they think.
