Wednesday 8 March 2023, 17.00 DART: Successful Demonstration of Asteroid Deflection Online Talk with Professor Derek Richardson
Clifton Colllege invites BEP students and staff to an online talk by Professor Derek Richardson about NASA’s DART mission.
The possibility of a devastating impact of an asteroid or comet on Earth is a popular theme in science fiction. Although the threat is real, as evidenced in the geologic record of impact craters on Earth, the chance of a true catastrophe in our lifetimes is exceedingly low. Nevertheless, of the various natural disasters that we face, a potential impact is something we can actually prevent in principle. On 26 September 2022, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission demonstrated that it is possible to intercept a celestial body and alter its orbit in a way that could deflect a hazardous object.
Join this talk online to hear about the highlights from this first mission to demonstrate impact hazard mitigation.
