Free School Meals

Free School Meals – changes from September 2026

From September 2026 the Government is changing who can get Free School Meals (FSM). These changes mean that more families will be eligible, particularly those receiving Universal Credit.

What’s changing?

  • More families will now qualify, if you receive Universal Credit, your child may be eligible regardless of your income level.
  • Previous protections are ending, some families who were protected under earlier rules (since 2018) may no longer qualify if their circumstances have changed. The Council will check all existing FSM claims to ensure they remain eligible.

Do I need to apply?

  • If you think you might be eligible, please apply via Bristol City Council.
  • If you applied before and were not eligible – it is important to apply again, as you might now be eligible against the new criteria.
  • Existing Fairfield students
    • If your child already attends Fairfield and receives FSM – you do not need to reapply, a check will be run to confirm eligibility. We will contact you if any action is needed.
    • If you are applying for the first time you can apply now using the link overleaf.
  • Incoming Year 7s only
    • If your child currently receives FSM at primary school, you will have to reapply as they are ending their phase of education. Whether you are reapplying or applying for the first time please apply after 17 August as the Council need to allocate your child to Fairfield before they can add your child to our list.

Why does this matter?

  • FSM allows your child to access a meal each day.
  • When you apply the Council will check whether your child is also eligible for Pupil Premium, this extra funding is provided directly to Fairfield to support with:
    • additional teaching support,
    • interventions or tutoring, and
    • clubs and wider opportunities.
